Amex Platinum Airbnb 5X: How It Works, the New Credits, and the Delta Double-Dip
Since October 22, 2026 you can book Airbnbs through Amex Travel and earn 5x Membership Rewards on the Platinum. Here is what changed, what the new credits really cover, and how to try stacking Delta SkyMiles on top.
The personal and Business Platinum earn 5x Membership Rewards on prepaid Airbnb bookings made through Amex Travel (most other Amex cards earn 2x). Eligible Airbnb Luxe stays now count toward the $600 Lodging Credit, and booking a Luxe stay unlocks an extra up to $250 Airbnb Experiences credit. Separately, linking your Delta SkyMiles and Airbnb accounts earns 1 mile per dollar on stays (3 on Experiences and Services). Delta miles do stack with card points when you pay with a card, but I could not find confirmation yet that they track on a booking that starts inside Amex Travel, so treat the double-dip as something to test, not a sure thing.
What changed on October 22
| Details | |
|---|---|
| 5x on Airbnb | Platinum and Business Platinum earn 5x Membership Rewards on prepaid Airbnb bookings through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel app. Other Membership Rewards cards, Gold included, earn 2x. |
| Lodging Credit | The old Hotel Credit is renamed the Lodging Credit. It is still up to $600 a year, in two halves of up to $300 (January to June and July to December), and now also covers prepaid Airbnb Luxe stays of at least two nights booked through Amex Travel. It is shared with Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection, so it is not extra money. |
| Experiences credit | After booking an eligible Luxe stay through Amex Travel, Platinum cardholders get up to $250 in statement credits toward Airbnb Experiences for the rest of that calendar year. |
| Two-night rule | Luxe stays need two nights for the credit. From January 1, 2027 Fine Hotels + Resorts stays also need two nights to earn the $300 credit. |
| Not for points | You cannot pay for an Airbnb with Amex points, and cash-plus-points is not offered. |
How to book it
- Go to AmexTravel.com or open the Amex Travel app and search for your stay.
- Connect your Amex and Airbnb accounts when prompted.
- Finish the booking on Airbnb, paying with your Platinum. Changes, cancellations and messages with the host then happen through Airbnb.
Only bookings that go through Amex Travel earn the 5x. Booking directly on Airbnb with the same card earns the ordinary 1x on the Platinum.
The two new credits, with the fine print
- Luxe only for the Lodging Credit. Only Airbnb Luxe properties qualify for the $300 half-year credits, not every listing. The 5x applies to regular listings too, as reported by Thrifty Traveler and Eye of the Flyer.
- Use it or lose it by half-year. The credit period follows when the charge processes, not the stay date. If the half-year credit is already used up, a Luxe booking will not unlock more.
- The Experiences credit needs a Luxe booking first. Buy the Experience directly from Airbnb. Experiences that send you to a third-party platform do not qualify. Cancelling the Luxe booking can lock the credit again and credits already received can be reclaimed.
- Enrollment. Amex says enrollment is required for select benefits and does not say which Airbnb ones, so check your card’s benefits page before relying on it.
Layering Delta SkyMiles on Airbnb
Delta runs its own Airbnb program. Per Delta and Upgraded Points, as of May 2026 you link your accounts at deltaairbnb.com, which opens a 10-day window. Bookings made inside that window earn:
- 1 SkyMile per $1 on Airbnb Homes (stays).
- 3 SkyMiles per $1 on qualifying Airbnb Experiences and Services.
Taxes, fees and discounts do not earn, listings fulfilled by third parties are excluded, and the name on the reservation must match your SkyMiles account. Miles post roughly six to eight weeks after the stay. You can re-link any time to open a new window, and the miles are earned on top of whatever your card earns. I did not find anything on whether these miles count toward Medallion Qualification Dollars.
Can you double-dip the Platinum 5x and Delta miles?
Here is a low-risk way to find out, using a booking you were going to make anyway:
- Link Delta and Airbnb at deltaairbnb.com first. Existing reservations do not earn, so link before you book.
- Within the 10-day window, start in AmexTravel.com and complete the booking on Airbnb.
- On the Airbnb checkout page look for the estimated SkyMiles line. Airbnb shows an estimate on qualifying listings once your accounts are linked. No estimate is a warning sign.
- Pay with the Platinum, keep the confirmation, and check your Delta account about two months after checkout.
If the miles do not post, you can still ask Delta to review the stay, but plan on the 5x being the only guaranteed reward.
What the math looks like
Example: a $2,000 stay before taxes and fees, paid with a Platinum.
| Route | Amex points | Delta miles | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Book in Amex Travel | 10,000 MR (5x) | 2,000 only if it tracks | Worth about $100 at 1 cent per point, or about $200 at the 2 cent average AwardWallet users report |
| Book direct on Airbnb, Delta linked | 2,000 MR (1x) | 2,000 | Delta tracking is the documented path, but you give up 8,000 points |
| Book in Amex Travel, Delta not tracked | 10,000 MR (5x) | 0 | Still the strongest reward for most people |
Unless Delta miles turn out to track inside Amex Travel, 5x on a pretax $2,000 beats the direct route by about 8,000 points. That is hard for 2,000 miles to make up.
Is it worth booking this way?
- You hold a Platinum or Business Platinum and the price matches Airbnb
- You can use the Luxe Lodging Credit or the $250 Experiences credit
- You value Membership Rewards at around a cent or more
- You pay with another card that earns 3x or more and a shopping portal pays extra
- The Amex Travel price is higher than Airbnb’s
- You specifically want guaranteed Delta miles
Compare the total price in both places first. One reviewer found price parity in a test booking, but warned Amex could change that, and found the same stay cheaper elsewhere.
